The wake

The corpse has been laying on the table for months, filled the place with maggots and flies. We ignore it, hoping that open windows will clear the putrid smell, and Death will start to blend in. There hasn’t been warmth in the house, naturally, we’d all rather freeze than face the rotting flesh.

Perhaps it is time to dig a hole, let the earth claim back what it owns. We’ll never wash Death from carpets and curtains, of course, but at least we won’t have to stare it in the eye and pretend it’s alive anymore..
